The wonderful landscape with inland ridges and magnificent archipelago is combined with a rich and fascinating cultural history. At the same time Uusimaa Region is the most populated area in Finland, with 1,3 million inhabitants. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is also the largest city in Uusimaa.

Uusimaa is worth visiting and easy to reach: three hours from London or Paris, two and half from Hamburg or Amsterdam by plane and you are at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, right at the heart of Uusimaa. One can also take a ferry from Stockholm, Sweden or Tallinn, Estonia to reach Helsinki.

To experience as much as possible during your visit to Uusimaa, you should travel the King's Road , an ancient highway of historical, cultural and touristic interest which follows the medieval mail coach route. It links the Nordic capitals Oslo and Stockholm with Turku and Helsinki in Finland, and continues directly on to St. Petersburg in Russia. Already in active use in the 14th century, the King's Road has for centuries been travelled by Kings and commoners alike, all making wide use of churches, estates and inns along the way. The medieval churches and 18th century manufacturing communities are well worth exploring.

However, the King's Road also focuses on contemporary southern Finnish arts and science. Numerous cultural events are regularly held along the Uusimaa part of the King's Road. The long history of the region combined with the wealth of the modern cultural scene promises the visitor a host of options to explore.
